"This style of colorful fabric is called kitenge and women love wearing it tied around the waist like a skirt or tailored into ankara-style clothing. Some of the older women dress up for church wearing bright, floor-length kitenge dresses with matching headscarves. When we travelled, our host families would often gift us fabric with a Bible verse along the bottom, wishing us blessings and safety in our journey." —Hartlee Johnston

Hartlee Johnston: Hartlee spent a semester studying abroad in Kenya. Between classes and field work, she spent countless hours tasting local food and learning how to cook it. She constantly found herself amazed by the cultural similarities between her culture and the Kenyan culture 8,500 miles apart. By the end of her semester she asked herself “now how Ken’ya get back to East Africa as soon as possible?” and found another opportunity to head back this summer to dig into the region some more!
