“My favorite was the arepas - everyone in Colombia does these differently but the ones in Cartagena were at the top of my list - thick, fat corn patties which were hot and fluffy, but crispy on the outside, slathered in butter with a cheesy garlic paste on top. I enjoyed just eating these and wandering around the historic walled-in part of the city.
Lots of history here, as the Spanish built forts in the 16th century to protect from the English and French while using the city as a base for the slave trade. The city center is still surrounded completely by a large wall from this era which provides some great ocean views from the top.
While I was in town, I also checked out the Castillo de San Felipe, the largest fort in Cartagena.
After a long day of walking through, I liked sitting on the wall or by the beach, catching some sea breeze in the less oppressive heat of evening, with a beautiful sunset spread out across the sea.”
