"Lots of history here, as the Spanish built forts in the 16th century to protect from the English and French while using the city as a base for the slave trade. The city center is still surrounded completely by a large wall from this era which provides some great ocean views from the top. " — Pam Polcaro

Pam Polcaro: The city was vibrant with lots of culture, street art, and carts full of the freshest mangoes (and other fruit). Street food on every corner had my mouth constantly watering, with someone always standing nearby with an aquarium of lemonade/limeade to parch my thirst. My favorite was the arepas - everyone in Colombia does these differently but the ones in Cartagena were at the top of my list - thick, fat corn patties which were hot and fluffy, but crispy on the outside, slathered in butter with a cheesy garlic paste on top. I enjoyed just eating these and wandering around the historic walled-in part of the city. The city center is still surrounded completely by a large wall from this era which provides some great ocean views from the top. While I was in town, I also checked out the Castillo de San Felipe, the largest fort in Cartagena, which provides a vista of the entire city center with the Caribbean beyond. After a long day of walking though, I liked sitting on the wall or by the beach, catching some sea breeze in the less oppressive heat of evening, with a beautiful sunset spread out across the sea.
